10 Tips on how to find your signature style

1. Choose a style that reflects your personality & and is practical for your lifestyle.
The whole point in finding your style is that you can stand out and represent your inner self on the surface of your body. Your style is one of the first things others notice about you, and thus you want to be able to design how this impression of you is made. In other words, show off your personality, whether it’s colorful, sophisticated, edgy, polished, something in between … or maybe a little bit of everything! This is solely your to decide. At the same time, keep in mind how your style choices affect your day-to-day lifestyle. You may decide to have different style bas on your plans for the day, ranging from work to nights out with the girls.

2. Find a color palette that suits your complexion
Any fashion stylist will emphasize the importance of find the right colors for a person’s complexion. Technically, black is the easiest color as it matches with practically every skin tone and requires the least effort to piece together. Transitioning to more vibrant colors and shades, however, takes more time to perfect. While it is generally easy to decide whether you like a certain color on you or not, sometimes you will face a color that you like but have trouble figuring out if it flatter your complexion. This is another aspect that requires greater research to perfect, and should be understood before taking risks with more extravagant color palettes.

3. Select silhouettes that flatter your body shape & accentuate your best features
Every woman has specific characteristics to their body that makes them unique. Not every piece works for every body, so it is essential you discover what flatters you most. Dig deep into the different body types and the types of clothes that flatter each. After matching your body type, keep what you found in mind when shopping for clothes. Be sure to try on everything before you buy, as some pieces end looking completely different off the hanger.

4. Don’t just copy others, but instead use them as inspiration
Face it. It is significantly unlikely that a single style icon, such as celebs, can completely match your personal style preferences. In fact, most icons are themselves a mix that makes them unique. Taking account of icons and influencers should be a source of inspiration to the development of your matchless style. To start this journey of inspiration, you may consider doing a Pinterest search of “style icons” to build your style preferences. You can even organize the looks you find into boards to better visualize your selection.

5. Snap & save your favorite outfits
Do you recall those extra special days when you walk out the door feeling like your most stylish, confident self? Snap a quick picture of your outfit for future reference. These are the outfits that embody your true personal style and should serve as inspiration for later outfits. Save these photos in a special album on your phone to make them easier to find.

6. Consider having a signature piece
While this is not a requirement, it helps to have a signature piece or two that becomes a part of your style identity. In other words, this should be something you would like to be remembered for. Celebrities serve as excellent examples in this department, including Car Delevingne and her feminized suits, Kim Kardashian’s body-cons which bring out her flawless curves, and Arianna Grande’s famous combination of long and high ponytail with cat eyeliner. While you can take inspiration from the signature pieces of others, it is essential that you find your own signature piece that matches with your own taste, accents your features, and harmonizes with your personality and sense of confidence.

7. Notice your own trends
Take a look at your closet and keep an eye out for any repetitions. There’s a reason your closet has an excess of a certain type of item. You purchase these items again and again because they stand within your taste categories. So as long as they are flattering to you and your current style, embrace it!

8. Kick out those that don’t belong
As your search for repetitions in your closet, notice any pieces that do not fit with the overall vibe. Chances are those pieces include a style you like but are not fully comfortable trying. Follow your heart in deciding whether to keep those pieces for a later time, but be sure not to purchase anymore pieces of that style until you’ve made a verdict on the ones you already have.

9. It’s okay to experiment, change & evolve.
There is big a difference between “signature style” and sticking to one thing. If you tend to buy everything in black or rely on one cut for jeans, try branching out with different colors, textures, and shapes.

The same goes with accessories: if, for instance, you normally only wear delicate designer jewelry, try layering multiple pieces or opting for a piece that really makes a statement. Keep in mind that style evolves, and you may end up surprising yourself when you try something new!

10. Know thyself
Trust your instincts, and wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself. Don’t let outside forces place pressure on you to apply a certain style if it makes you feel uncomfortable in any way. You have your own style preferences and no one has the right to try to change it. Chances are you’ve likely already got a winning sense of style, so embrace it, refine it, and don’t fight it.
